PAST STUDENT NEWSLETTERS

I hope this letter finds you all happy and healthy and looking forward to a new decade.    What a year it has been so far.   There is much to talk about.

Make sure to see the KERA special:  YOUNG AT HEART.   It is about a choral group with an average age of 83 that sing modern rock songs.   VERY inspirational.    Live until you die is the message here.   DO NOT MISS IT!

Last year I read some great books that I think you all would enjoy.   Check them out:

Here There & Everywhere (My Life Recording The Music Of The Beatles) by Geoff Emerick.   Geoff was the recording engineer present at all of The Beatles recording sessions.   This book motivated me to record six albums in 2009.  The book was a gift from a student.  Thanks Steve L.!

All You Need Is Ears  story of George Martin. by Jeremy Hornsby   George was The Beatles Producer.   No George Martin no Beatles.

Hotel California by Barney Hoskyns.  Awesome story of how 70s rock got started.

Take It To The Limit: The Untold Story of The Eagles by Mark Eliot

Heaven & Hell (My Life With The Eagles 1971-1974  by Don Felder.  This guy was the Forrest Gump of guitar players.  Before he was out of high school he taught Tom Petty how to play guitar and hung out with Greg and Duane Allman!

I think you would like these books.   I did.   They were very helpful musically in many ways.   It is amazing how the two greatest bands of all times were just regular folks like you and me.

My new cd with The Bucketones is finished and will be out soon on Amazon and iTunes.

The Bucketones   Tune In A Bucket

The Bucketones are one of my alter egos.   This is all original bluegrass acoustic instrumental tunes I have written over the past 15 years.

Stay tuned.  Available soon.  More information at the Bucketones' web site www.Bucketones.com

I record here at my home studio.  Then I take the WAV files to the big fancy studio in Dallas www.TheKitchenStudios.net where the engineer automates the tracks to adjust for volume,  tone,  and effects.  He is also able to remove unwanted noise (sniffs and throat clearing along with pick clicks).  Then the bass goes through the $10,000 compressor and is tweaked to perfection.   The difference between the sound going into the big studio and coming out are night and day.  J.P. is the engineer at The Kitchen Studios and he really knows his stuff.   Very fast.  He can edit about 3 songs per hour.  After all the mixing is finished he will master the tracks.  That gets all the songs the same volume and he can do any last minute adjustments on the over all sound that you can only hear when listening to all the songs in one sitting.

He will then provide me with a master cd.  I will send the master to the cd printers and email them the artwork for the front, back, inside, and cds.   In one week the finished cds will show up here shrink wrapped, bar coded and ready to sell.

I will also load the tracks up to TuneCore.com who will distribute the cds through Amazon, iTunes, and many more.

Each project costs about $500 for the mixing and mastering.  $300 to print 100 cds.   $50 to load the album up to iTunes for distribution.

I will also sell them at Bill's Records & Tapes and a few other spots around Dallas.

When someone orders a copy from Amazon then Amazon will print a one off copy of the cd including artwork, shrink wrap it and ship it.   I no longer have to handle the individual sales.  Each recording becomes a money tree.

Recording is a very slow process but the most rewarding thing you can do music wise.  I spend most of my free time recording.  I hope you do too!

My Jam Alongs are selling well:

Here are the music videos to two original songs on YouTube.

Blue Noodle #3

Blue Noodle #3 is a southern rock blues guitar solo instrumental I wrote.   Noodle refers to the solo.   Jimmy Rodgers named his songs; Blue Yodel #? when he could not come up with a better name.  Blue Yodel #1 is better known as T For Texas.  12 bar blues in A.

Guitar Lover

This is one of my original compositions called Guitar Lover.  Instrumental country surf rock guitar song tribute to my favorite guitar instrumental songs of all time.   Fun and easy to play songs like Pipe Line,  Walk Don't Run,  Wildwood Flower,  Under The Double Eagle,  and Bull Durham that we all grew up listening to.  This song is also very simple.   The only chords are E C7 and B7.    I hope you get a kick out of it.

In an effort to go green I am once again offering on line guitar lessons.   I tried this a few years ago but the technology was not right yet.   Today the quality depends on your Internet connection speed.   If you have a web cam and and IM service like Google's Gmail (free) we can do our lessons on line.  No long distance fees.   Lessons will be scheduled like a regular 'in person' lesson.  It is a live lesson so be prepared to ask questions.  For more information go to ON LINE LESSONS

Today's video is a one of my favorite bands of the early 70s; The Flying Burrito Brothers playing one of my favorite truck songs; Six Days On The Road.  Country rock.  Very rare video.

Enjoy.
